Preconceptional

 The goal of pre conceptional care is to otimize health and to reduce the risk of adverse health effects for the woman, fetus, and neonate by addressing modifiable risk factors, and provide education.

Many chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, psychiatric illness, and thyroid disease can adversely affect pregnancy outcomes hence should be optimally managed before pregnancy. 

Some of the topics which should be discussed with the patient are optimal intervals between pregnancies,  Assessment for sexually transmitted infection and screening for the  genetic conditions.  All patients should be routinely asked about their use of alcohol, nicotine products, and drugs, including prescription opioids and other medications used for non medical reasons. . 

Female prepregnancy folic acid supplementation should be encouraged to reduce the risk of neural tube defects.
